Brian Glanville's Italy
Brian Glanville lived for several years in florence and Rome and worked for several decades for the Rome daily newspaper, the Corriere Dello Sport. He has also written for most of the leading Italian papers, among them La Stampa, Corriere della Sera and Florence's La nazione. His Florentine novel, Along the Arno, was warmly received by the critics in 1956. After Rome Africa was set in Calabria, involving the 'ndrangheta Mafia. A Roman Marriage, published in numerous different countries, appeared in 1966. Kissing America, a novel also set in Florence, portrayed the hopes and illusions of Americans living on the GI Bill. In 1989, The Catacomb dealt with contemporary terrorism, with an underlying theme of past equivalence: in the shape of the famous English mercenary, Sir John Hawskwood, alias Giovanni Acuto, plus many Italian short stories. Brian Glanville frequently revisits Italy, where his daughter has lived in Rome for fiteen years and her twin at 17 spent four months as a professional footballer. His play, A Visit to the Villa, set in Tuscany, was performed in Chichester in 1981 and by Sir John Gielgud on BBC World Service in 1995.
