At the end of the University summer term at Oxford, in 1944, John Wain at the age of 18, played the part of Claudio in Shakespeare's Measure For Measure in a production by Neville Coghill. In the same cast, although they did not share the stage, was the young Richard Burton, in the part that began his journey to being a superstar. John Wain wrote about this experience, and his friendship with Burton which lasted for years, in Dear Shadows (1986) which is a memoir of people the writer knew, now dead. The pen portrait of Burton can be found on the book's page on this site.
