Colm Quinn

Ones From 67

Funny, sad, raw and true, the account, in story and poetic form, of a young man growing up in West Belfast and a picture of an old woman in a million, Colm Quinn's debut.

Evocative and lyrical, if you've ever been a Grandchild you must read this' Liz Taylor,BBC Bristol

Colm is 27 and hails from Belfast, his background in the Falls Road area providing much of the backdrop for this personal story of his upbringing with his grandmother; it ends with her death and Colm's departure for England.

Colm subtly explores the divisions of life in his home town, what it is like to grow up in poverty, and pays tribute to the strange love and hate between grandmother and grandchild. It makes for some funny and moving scenes told in Colm's unique style. Ones from 67 was previewed at the Aberdeen Word 2001 festival with Colm doing some successful readings. He has recently read at the Edinburgh Fringe.

"Alan Spence, poet and festival organiser, writes : Colm Quinn is a powerful new voice coming out of Belfast. There's a raw intensity of experience behind these poems and stories, and there's a strong, often argumentative intelligence shaping the work - an awareness of structure and craft. He excels in delineating the complex relationships in a decidedly non-nuclear family, being brought up by 'Granny', a formidable old woman still giving the finger to life in her nineties! It's a brutally affectionate portrayal of an utterly memorable character.
